Gmackrr - La dépendance électrique - SBT

Spring Break Tapes, SBT034
Release date: 6 June 2017
Edition: 100
Comes with digital download card

La Dépendance Électrique is a kaleidoscopic farrago of analog synthesis, cracked electronics and sprayed samples. There’s a Debussy feel floating throughout, which is a stately enough vibe for strolls along Montreal's grand boulevards of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. The set of vocal performances make the record seem utterly personal as the fable of Electricity is told: a woman who travels the circuitous, fluvial pathways looking for love, always unrequited.

Big thanks to my dear collaborators-facilitators : Joe McKay, Karl Fousek, Alexandre St Onge, François Létourneau, Jérôme Boivin, Louis Desparois, Alex Moskos, Andrea-Jane Cornell, Catherine Debard, Rodrigo Medrano, Panopticon Eyelids, Steve Godin, JS Truchy.

Review :

La Dépendance Électrique is a cooler shade of blue. The electronic experiments run at an Olympian’s pace, with bright trills and seductive phrases overlapping each other in what feels like a relay race, eventually reaching a convergence point and striking gold. The more experimental sounds bump into and brush against other sounds, creating accidental rhythms that may or may not be accidents, before blooming into entirely new phrases.

Water-like tones slip and slide around, almost as if they’ve escaped from Wet ‘n Wild or Typhoon Lagoon; the slippery sounds are only glimpsed. It’s a whole new world down there, and frothy vocals float around in the tape, sometimes gurgling, sometimes bubbling, manifesting under the water as a paler, ghostly sibling of Ariel, the little mermaid; a phantom lurking around in the thin reels of tape, the pure electronic textures leaking a human voice. Speedy, cycling melodies give off playful vibes on “She Sheltered Me”, and the recurring rhythm ingrains itself in the mind. You’re sitting at the front, in danger of getting very wet. You’re in the splash zone, but the music is a cooling sound, and cooling down is a good thing when the temperatures bust through forty degrees. “Electricity Is A Woman Travelling For Love” brings to the fore the experimental side of the artist and is gloriously drunk.

Later on, a growling portion of the music sinks its teeth into the ears like a rabid version of Mike Tyson, appearing as the glistening, golden fangs of a trident, a three-pronged attack pulling you under its waves. The notes are in the process of dissolving, turning into nothing but mush. Crushed quavers float on the surface. The only certain thing: Gmackrr‘s identity remains top secret.

Gmackrr - Gamma Larks (Inyrdisk)

From Inyrdisk's website :
Wether she's in France or Montréal, gmackrr (Emilie Mouchous) is sure to be found quietly refining her gentle drone experiments and avant-garde glitch compositions. Gamma Larks is not only the first gmackrr release in five years but it is also her most refined and unified electronic statement to date. An unforgettably delightful drift through colourfully alien realms of post-modern sound sculpture, Gamma Larks is a mesmerizing masterpiece of understated sonic beauty.

Edition: 30 CD-Rs / Cardstock print / $5 each

15x 6inches lathe cuts
4 to 5 minutes of private improvisation - all different and unique - some have locked grooves
One of a kind artwork.

"They're here! The GMACKRR private-performace single-cuts, as discussed in the Jam Camp post. GMACKRR is from Tarbes and lives in Montreal. Fluorescent Friends sponsored her visa application and it still stands as probably the best move the company has ever made. As a composer and performer she has toured extensively in North America and Europe. She is the designer and builder of an analog synthesizer which is currently her principal performance instrument; she previously worked with toys and a big black thing called KORG. In Montreal she is equally recognized as a concert organizer, radio host, and carries the distinction of being the designer of the lovely fluorescentfriends.org. Get your own private audience with GMACKRR. Five unique performances cut directly to disc; you are purchasing the master, the recordings exist in no other form, digital or otherwise."  - Fluorescent friends

i change my leggings in the middle of the video...

Vagina Bison - Saigna Bovin - Pleasance Records, Toronto

"vagina bison is a band that i started in 2007 (or was it 2006?) with Montrealer Emilie M. as our own "wolf project" since it seems like most of the wolf bands that year were doing pretty well. when the name of the project switched from vagina wolf to vagina bison 20 minutes after its conception our hopes and dreams of making it big flew out the window and all we were left with was a ridiculously named project that only performed when one of us happened to be in the others city. it's been a long time since this duo was thought about, but it seems that with a couple of shows this week and this new cassette available this band may just have a chance. i hope 2011 is the year of bison bands. or not. the cassette contains all of our recordings that weren't terrible and meandering from the active period. that amounts to 30 minutes worth of primordial musical wonderment. recording will re-commence this week, so you can expect more from the older more mature people i'm pretty sure we've become." Andrew Zukerman - sept 2010

Thanks a lot to Deirdre O'Sullivan and James Lindsay from Pleasance Records, Toronto !

Sound extract of the cassette :

Here's a picture and recording of  Vagina Bison performing at Korova Milkbar in Toronto as the tape was just launched. This show was part of the not the wind not the flag/vagina bison tour in september 2010 (poster by Andrew Zukerman). Review and documentation by Mechanical Forest Sound.

gmackrr + Brandon Valdivia - Sans Nuage

CD-R and photocopied artwork - april 2010

"Sans Nuage is a collaboration between Montreal's Emilie M. (aka Gmackrr) and Brandon Valdivia (the multi-limbed percussionist from Toronto, ON's Not the Wind Not the Flag). The eight pieces feature Valdivia's trademarked, rapid-fire, ramshackle percussion, alongside plucked and bowed strings, analog synthesizer and field recordings, courtesy of Mouchous. Crafted during a tour of France and Belgium, Sans Nuage includes scattershot percussive clusters, meandering string exercises and a few droning passages. Things really get exciting on the sixth track when Mouchous pits her squelching synthesizer against the thunderous blasts emanating from Valdivia. At this point, the players have reached a zenith and seem to have become a single entity. The closing piece, in which the players sound like they're beneath a bird-filled tree, emits a percussive melody that manages to be nuanced enough not to scare the birds away."

Bryon Hayes, Exclaim.ca - july 2010

Emilie Mouchous & AJ Cornell - Avant-plans et bruits de fond

CD-R and photocopied booklet - march 2010

Andrea-Jane and I first started to collaborate on air on CKUT Radio, which shortly led to recording dates...Avant-plans et bruits de fond is a collection of recordings involving found sounds, metal balls, found objects, analog synthesizers and processors as well as handmade electronics. Although we played together for Macaroni Marathon in Montreal last march, we're mostly a Maine-made live band, performing at the Frantasia Festival as well as the University of Maine in Farmington.

New Adventures in Sound Art (Toronto) featured our piece Miutes Tessituras in their DEEP WIRELESS Radio Art CD compilation (may 2010).

cd-r on Brise-cul records - aug 2008 - SADE 107

'Everybody in the Montréal circle knows the great person under the moniker of Gmackrr. Emilie M. arrived from France in the Montreal streets a couple of years ago and she performed many fantastic and unique performances with a very great mixture of emotions and great sense of composition. Many of her performance are unique, sometimes with bended toys, laptop or analogue synth. On this long-awaited release on Brise-Cul, mme Mouchous go more on the melodic synth drone side. As the title suggests, Méditative is a collection of melodic analogue meditations to elevate you mind to. When you repeat listening over and over again you will end up being higher near nirvana!'

Silences

Silences amplifiés / amplified silences - 2004

These are the first sound pieces I ever made ! It's a concept album based on the amplification and processing of silence and an obvious reference to a great sound art pioneer. The material is exclusively composed of sound captures of contact microphones that are left floating in the air.
I can't find the original cover, which featured a close-up of the inside of my mouth (was playing a lot putting microphones inside my mouth at the time, which i still do i guess...).
